From the 2015 Brooklyn Museum exhibit: José Campeche (1751-1809), Puerto Rico’s most gifted portraitist, painted Doña Maria de los Dolores in a fashionably informal muslim chemise dress at the time of her marriage to Don Benito Pérez, a fellow Spaniard and the future viceroy of New Granada. His nam is inscribed, along with hers, on the folded letters on the marble tabletop. Six years earlier, at age fifteen, Doña Maria de los Dolores had crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Cádiz with her mother and stepfather, a newly appointed sergeant major in the San Juan division of the Spanish navy.
