Retailers’ Latest Headache: Shutdowns at Their Vietnamese Suppliers1

Factories in the country, a major apparel and footwear supplier to the U.S., have been forced by the pandemic to close or operate at reduced capacity, complicating the all-important holiday season.

The crisis in Vietnam, which has grown in recent years to become the second-biggest supplier of apparel and footwear to the United States after China, is the latest curveball to be tossed at the retail industry, which has been battered by the pandemic.

My 2 cents opinion: Never would I have imagined when forced to be stationed in Vietnam as a soldier in ’72 “fighting communism”, that Vietnam would end up being a major supplier of manufactured goods for the nation that invaded it. Maybe in 30 years, Afghanistan will end up being a major supplier of stuff to sell in American stores.
