It has been a tragedy that during my lifetime, I saw how Puerto Rico has changed from a land of unlimited potential, to a struggling Caribbean island that cannot provide low cost basic necessities to its population. When I was young I thought that the constant migration to the United States was an act of desperation for the islanders who had no hope of affording the island’s resources. Now, I see that this pattern is now historic and predictable with no end in sight. Without being able to control its own economy, Puerto Ricans are relegated to consumers of the United States Corporate Economy. Politicians enjoy the benefits, the rest pay a lifetime. |
